Let’s talk about the mystery of being unworthy yet clean, set apart, redeemed, and certainly not worthless! Our value comes from the Lord. Let’s discuss when that worth began.
First let’s start with the word, worthless, and how much the enemy loves that word. Satan’s a big bully. He loves to tell us that we are so unworthy that God could never possibly forgive us of our giant mountain of sins. He loves for us to believe that God can forgive others, but just not us, personally. Watch the video for more commentary on this study of what God's Word has to say about our worth and the words, worthless and unworthy.
What does the Word say about the word, worthless?
The Hebrew word for “worthless or wicked” is Belial, which is another name for Satan. The following verses, when you go to the King James Version or the Strong’s Concordance on the Blue Letter Bible app actually say Belial instead of “worthlessness,” which is what it is commonly translated to.
2 Corinthians 6:15 (ESV) “What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever?”
Deuteronomy 13:13 (KJV) Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known;
Judges 19:22 (KJV) Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.
1Sa 1:16 (KJV) Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.
1 Sa 2:12 (KJV) Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the LORD.
1Sa 10:27 (KJV) But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.
1Sa 25:17 (KJV) Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: for he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.
(This verse is a clue as to why it is important to bind up the “strong man” (Belial) first, so that people can receive the Gospel when they hear it. The enemy blinds people and hardens hearts from receiving the Gospel. See also Matthew 12:29, Mark 3:27, Matthew 18:18-20, John 12:39-40, 2 Corinthians 3:14)
Scriptures about "Unworthy," meaning undeserving:
Luke 17:10 (ESV) So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.'"
1 Corinthians 11:27 (ESV) Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.
1 Corinthians 15:9 (ESV) For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
Acts 13:46 (ESV) And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you. Since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.
Our WORTH comes from God’s love, and the precious blood of Jesus Christ makes us CLEAN/REDEEMED, adopted as SONS and DAUGHTERS of GOD:
1 John 4:19 (ESV) We love because he first loved us.
1 John 4:10 (ESV) In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
Romans 5:8 (ESV) but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Ezekiel 18:32 (ESV) For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord GOD; so turn, and live."
Atonement by the blood:
Leviticus 17:11 (ESV) For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.
Why did Jesus have to die for our sins? Only death can pay for sins.
Romans 6:23 (ESV) For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Revelation 12:11 (ESV) And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.
Ephesians 2:13 (ESV) But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Sons & Daughters of the Everlasting, Living God:
John 1:12 (ESV) But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
1 John 3:10 ESV By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.
1 John 5:2 ESV By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments.
When did our value begin? In ETERNITY. Psalms 139:13-16 (NLT)
13You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
15You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
16You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out
before a single day had passed.
Ephesians 2:10 (ESV) For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
We become useful vessels when we receive the power of the Holy Spirit. We are the dwelling place, the Living Temple of God, this is why Peter called us living stones in 1 Peter 2:5.
The Temple of the Living God 2 Corinthians 6:14-18
14Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? 16What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said,
"I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
and they shall be my people.
17 Therefore go out from their midst,
and be separate from them, says the Lord,
and touch no unclean thing;
then I will welcome you,
18 and I will be a father to you,
and you shall be sons and daughters to me,
says the Lord Almighty."
