How to Seek Joy in the Midst of Suffering

How do we seek joy if we are in a season of suffering? In this episode, I tackle this tough topic. I hope it will give you hope and encouragement.

Bible Study Scripture References:

“Even in laughter the heart may ache, and the end of joy may be grief.”

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭14:13‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Godly grief vs. worldly grief

“For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.”

‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭7:10‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Count it all joy.

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

‭‭James‬ ‭1:2-8‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Find laughter.

“A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭17:22‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:8‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Steer clear of the crude jokes.

“Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.”

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭5:4‬ ‭ESV‬‬

God wants us to have joy.

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

‭‭Psalm‬ ‭16:11‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”

‭‭John‬ ‭15:11‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.”

‭‭John‬ ‭16:24‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“Even in laughter the heart may ache, and the end of joy may be grief.”

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭14:13‬ ‭ESV‬‬

We don't suffer alone.

The Lord has laid it on my heart that there are a lot of people suffering right now. You are not alone. We are one in the body of Christ. So if one of us suffers, we all suffer together.

“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body— Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.”

‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭12:12-13, 26‬ ‭ESV‬‬,26.esv

What if it’s a thorn in the flesh?

A thorn in one’s flesh is not a punishment and it can be used for God’s glory that we don’t even understand. As we suffer and don’t lose faith our lives become a witness of God’s power shining through weakness. A thorn in the flesh is to keep us humble. It reminds us to rely on the power of God and not ourselves.

“So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭12:7-10‬ ‭ESV‬‬

This momentary affliction does not compare with the glory that is to come.

“So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”

‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭4:16-18‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Some healing is on the journey.

Read about the cleansing of the 10 lepers in Luke 17:11-19.

Suffering is not a punishment.

God rebukes us with redemptive discipline. He disciplines those He loves for the sake of reconciliation and our own edification (building up).

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.”

‭‭1 John‬ ‭4:18‬ ‭ESV‬‬

We participate in the sufferings of Christ as co-heirs with Christ.

“and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:17‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Long-suffering is part of the fruit of the Spirit.

The fruit leads to our sanctification. It is God’s will that we are sanctified (set apart).

“But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:22‬ ‭ESV‬‬
