How to Set Your Burdens Down

God does not load us up like a donkey. Jesus actually carries us on His shoulders like a sheep. So why do we feel so heavy laden? Let’s explore this in this episode of Faith Training.

Bible Study Video Scripture References:

““What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.”

‭‭Luke‬ ‭15:4-5‬ ‭ESV‬‬

We can’t have a light heart while carrying heavy baggage.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.””

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭11:28-30‬ ‭ESV‬‬

We are not in charge of protecting Jesus or protecting God. We defend the gospel, but standing firm in the Truth doesn’t make us God’s defenders or protectors.

“I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.”

‭‭Galatians‬ ‭1:6-7‬ ‭ESV‬‬

He’s our Defender.

Psalm 91

“He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭91:4‬ ‭NIV‬‬

We set our burdens down, the burden of the law, and the shame that we have disobeyed it. This doesn’t mean that we abandon the law, but rather that we don’t put our faith in the law to save us. The law was given to be like a fence to keep us in safe pasture, but our righteousness comes through the blood of Jesus Christ. The law also reveals our need for a Savior. The law is the righteousness of God, and we don’t live up to it. All like sheep have gone astray.

Jesus does live up to the Law, though. He is not the abolition of the Law. He’s the fulfillment of the Law and the prophets. Our faith in Him is what saves us. When we put our faith in the fence we take our eyes off Jesus and put too much faith in ourselves to keep God’s law. When we put our faith in Jesus Christ and ask for forgiveness of our sins, God is faithful to forgive us.

“yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.”

‭‭Galatians‬ ‭2:16-21‬ ‭ESV‬‬

We ask the Holy Spirit for the discipline to turn from sin. The Holy Spirit circumcises our hearts and writes the law on our hearts.

The breastplate of righteousness keeps our hearts from getting broken again by sin, particularly our own sin. It may help us to stay out of trouble in the ways that people sin against us, but not always.

“And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’””

‭‭Luke‬ ‭18:19-20‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.””

‭‭Luke‬ ‭18:22‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, “How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.””

‭‭Luke‬ ‭18:24-25‬ ‭ESV‬‬

The rich man was weighed down with possessions to the point that given the opportunity to leave everything and follow Jesus that He didn’t go. It’s like saying I would love to go but I’ve got these heavy bags 💼 to carry. He believed He had obeyed the law, but Jesus was gracious not to list the commandments the man was disobedient of. The man didn’t realize he was actually poor in need of a savior because he disobeyed the law by putting money and possessions ahead of God.

“No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.””

‭‭Luke‬ ‭16:13‬ ‭ESV‬‬

He wasn’t perfect by the law. Jesus was perfect and the man didn’t recognize his need.

The rich man thought he had everything he needed. Are we like that too sometimes? Do we think we have everything we need from God? Do we think we have salvation, but don’t need to follow Jesus?

So how do we set our burdens down?

We stop pursuing money, possessions, power, and control.

We don’t escape into the pleasures of the world.

We realize that nothing can fill the void in our lives except Jesus. Because we have all sinned, We were created with a great need for a Savior. Nothing will satisfy our thirst except Jesus.

So we humble ourselves before God and we ask Jesus to come into our hearts. We commit our lives to following him.

This means that we build our relationship with Jesus Christ through staying close to Him.

1. We read God’s Word and become not only hearers of the Word but doers also.

2. We lean in, in prayer and listen to the Holy Spirit. Then we obey what He says. We make every effort to obey, repent when we mess up, and do the next right thing.

3. We make every effort to focus on Jesus and live Spirit-led lives.
